Roy Keane has said he would still like to play in the World Cup - but that time is running out for him.

Keane told RTE he was aware of the pain and confusion caused to the nation by the row with Mick McCarthy.

"Nobody wanted this," he said.

An emotional Keane added: "My conscience is clear and that is the most important thing in my life."

He also said that he felt the anguish deeply himself. "I want to play for Ireland. There's nobody wants to play for Ireland as much as me.

"It's hurting me - dead right it is."

When asked if he would McCarthy and the FAI halfway, Keane said "possibly".

"You never know. We'll see."

Maybe there is a way. Who knows? We're running out of time."
