Jason McAteer is a major doubt for Ireland's World Cup opener against Cameroon next Saturday.

The Sunderland winger was stretchered off ten minutes before half time and it has been confirmed that he suffered medial ligament damage to his left knee.

He hasn't been ruled out of the World Cup, but he is unlikely to be fit in time for the Cameroon match.

Meanwhile, his Sunderland team mate Kevin Kilbane should be fully fit for Ireland's opening game.

The injury that saw him limp off today was no more serious than a bruised left ankle.
