Gerrard’s hopes hang in the balance

England midfielder Steven Gerrard was today waiting to hear whether his fading World Cup dreams have been shattered by injury.

Gerrard suffered a recurrence of a groin problem that has afflicted him since at least February in Liverpool’s final game of the season against Ipswich on Saturday.
