Nationwide League: West Brom 45 mins away from Premiership
West Brom 1, Crystal Palace 0 (half-time)
Darren Moore’s second goal of the season put West Bromwich Albion 45 minutes away from the Premiership at a tension-filled Hawthorns today.
Moore slid in at the far post in the 15th minute to fire home after Derek McInnes’ cross from the right.
His goal eased some of the jitters for Albion, who had almost gone behind twice in the first three minutes.
Danny Granville’s shot was tipped over the bar by Russell Hoult and Simon Rodger’s resulting corner was booted clear from three yards by McInnes.
Albion’s surge into the second automatic promotion slot had come down totheir incredible record of 17 1-0 victories and although it was all they needed today it was a particularly dangerous game to play.
Moore was keeping Akinbiyi at bay down the centre but Morrison was finding space on the left and beginning to threaten.
From a Rodger free-kick from the left on the half-hour, Akinbiyi rose highest in the box but could not connect.
Then Hopkin’s attempted through-ball towards an unmarked Morrison in the box was well cut out by Adam Chambers.
Balis tore down right for Albion and crossed for Dichio to set up a chance for Clement, but the big defender could get little power onto his header which was comfortably gathered by Kolinko.
News from Hillsborough of Sheffield Wednesday’s equaliser against Wolves settled the Albion players’ nerves still further they knew about it thanks to the roar of delight which emanated from all sections of the ground when the news filtered through.
In first-half injury time Taylor was put through by Balis but failed to make the most of his chance and the ball trickled wide.
