Champions League: Real end Bayern's European reign

Real Madrid 2-0 Bayern Munich (Agg: 3-2)

Real Madrid ended Bayern Munich's reign as European champions as they beat Ottmar Hitzfeld's side 2-0 at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium to progress to an all-Spanish UEFA Champions League semi-final against FC Barcelona.

Trailing 2-1 from the second leg, Madrid claimed the victory they needed through second-half goals from Iván Helguera and substitute José María Gutierrez.

Madrid were well worth a victory that avenges last season's semi-final defeat by the German side, who had won six of the previous seven encounters between these two European heavyweights.

Bayern ended the match with ten men after the late dismissal of Hasan Salihamidzic for a lunge at Santiago Solari.
