Roddy Collins had said that he would leave the club unless the current owner Michael Knighton sold it to Irish businessman John Courtenay before Wednesday.

When the Cumbrian board of directors heard his remark, they were infuriated. They then decided to sack the United boss.

Carlisle are just six points above second bottom Lincoln in Division Three.
