Premiership: Beckham opens scoring for Utd

England captain David Beckham has opened the scoring for Manchester Utd against Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford.

The last time these sides met they produced one of the matches of the season or any season when United came back from 3-0 down at half-time to win 5-3 at White Hart Lane.

Juan Veron, who scored one of the United goals that September day, tried to get on the scoresheet again and he unleashed a right-foot drive, which was deflected wide for a corner.

Back came Tottenham and Ben Thatcher’s curling left-wing cross fell to Simon Davies whose 20-yard shot was deflected behind.

The gusting wind was making playing conditions difficult and Fabien Barthez saved a shot from United old boy Teddy Sheringham before he made an even better stop to keep out a Gus Poyet drive.

Keane then threaded the ball through to Scholes on the edge of the D and the spun round and fired in a shot which was held by Tottenham goalkeeper Neil Sullivan.

David Beckham made the breakthrough on 15 minutes when van Nistelrooy released him on the right and the England skipper held off the challenge of Thatcher before he scored with his left foot into the far corner.

United kept up the pressure and Sullivan pushed a Keane drive away for a corner.

Meanwhile, Liverpool will take on Newcastle as 8.30pm - the match was supposed to begin at 8pm but was postponed for a half-hour due to a lights failure at Anfield.

Chelsea and Fulham is the only other game in the Premiership where goals have been scored. The Blues lead Fulham 2-1.
