Uefa Cup: Leeds and PSV scoreless at break
PSV Eindhoven 0, Leeds 0 (half-time)
Mark Viduka cut a frustrated figure after being denied by two goal-line clearances, but it was PSV Eindhoven who enjoyed the majority of the chances in the first half of this UEFA Cup fourth-round tie at the Philips Stadium.
It took two goal-line clearances in the space of 60 seconds at the midway point of the half to deny Leeds - and Viduka in particular - the lead.
The first opportunity saw Ian Harte whip in a free-kick from wide on the left after Smith had been hacked down by Oojier, only for the centre-back to then head clear as Viduka floated in a header from the far post.
It was Viduka and Smith who then combined moments later, with the latter latching onto a pass from his strike partner and attempting a chip over the advancing Patrick Loudewijks.
The PSV keeper, however, produced a superb point-blank block which forced the ball up into the air for Viduka to then power a header goalwards, but the Australia star was thwarted again as striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink hooked away.
Six minutes later PSV were denied a penalty by Italian referee Stefano Braschi when a 20-yard drive from George Gakhokidze struck the arm of Dominic Matteo after Martyn was left stranded following a poor punched clearance from Rommedahl’s cross.
An injured Bruggink, holding his thigh, then limped off in the 36th minute to be replaced by John de Jong, joining Vennegoor up front.
