Diego Forlan chose to join Manchester United ahead of Middlesbrough because they offered more money.

Forlan arrived in Manchester to complete his £6.9m transfer from Argentinian side Independiente.

The Uruguayan striker will have his medical on Sunday, and it may be Monday before he signs what is expected to be a four-and-a-half-year contract.

After arriving at Manchester Airport, he said: "The offer was bigger for the club, for Independiente, and for me.

"I was going to go to Middlesbrough, but Manchester offered more."

Forlan already knows much about his prospective new team-mates and he has watched United many times on television back in South America.

"They're all big players, and I know them because I've seen them playing on TV in the league and in the cups," he said.

"I hope I can get into the team - but first of all I have to sign. Then we can talk about that."
