UEFA Cup: Inter deserved win - Burley

George Burley had no complaints as Christian Vieri scored a hat-trick to inspire Inter Milan to an assured UEFA Cup victory over Ipswich.

Inter succumbed to a 1-0 defeat in the first leg at Portman Road with a weakened team.

However, with Vieri restored to the side in the San Siro, the Serie A leaders outplayed the bottom-placed Premiership side in establishing a 4-2 aggregate victory.

Alun Armstrong's late penalty was little more than a poor consolation for the 8,000-strong contingent of Ipswich fans after Vieri's complete hat-trick with goals with each foot as well as his head.

Burley admitted: "It has been a great experience but we have finally been beaten by a very good side.

"We played very well at home to win 1-0 but Vieri has proved he's one of the best strikers in the world and he was very hard to deal with.

"That's why Inter paid £30m for him. There was a quality ball for the first goal from a free-kick, he snapped onto a half-chance with a volley for the second and there was some bad defending for the third.

"Full credit to Inter though. They would have caused any team problems on this form.

"This experience will stand us in good stead for the future though. Our priority has always been the Premiership and now we have to get over this defeat.

"We have to work hard to put it right with our league form, starting this weekend against Newcastle.

"Our fans gave us tremendous support throughout our UEFA Cup campaign. All credit to them. They've enjoyed it and hopefully one day we will qualify for Europe again."
