Liverpool will be happy with this result giving them their first point of the Champions League second phase.

Vladimir Smicer of Liverpool went close with a first-half volley but he shot straight at Antonioli from Jamie Carragher's long ball.

Emile Heskey then misses a great chance to give Liverpool the lead but blasted wide of goal from 10 metres after a neat lay-off by Sammy Hyypiä.

Roma stepped it up in the second-half and Assuncao went closest for the hosts with a delightful 25-metre free-kick which flew outside Jerzy Dudek's right post.
