Sunderland boss Peter Reid paid tribute to another of his bargain buys after seeing his side dismantle Leeds’ bid to return to the top of the FA Barclaycard Premiership table.
Jason McAteer, who spent five months largely languishing in Blackburn Rovers’ reserves before Reid brought him to Wearside, was the heartbeat of a Black Cats side as they weathered a storm and then struck decisively to condemn the Yorkshiremen to their first league defeat of the season.
