Premiership: Bolton slump to home defeat

Bo Hansen found himself playing between the posts for half an hour as Bolton slumped to a 4-0 home defeat against Newcastle.

Hansen took to wearing the gloves after Jussi Jaaskelainen was sent off for handling Laurent Robert's shot outside the area.

Sam Allardyce decided to go into the match without back-up as number two Steve Banks was sidelined with a dislocated finger.

Jaaskelainen was dismissed on the hour with Bolton trailing 1-0 at the time after a goal from Nolberto Solano.

Hansen's first task was to retrieve the ball from the net after Robert curled in the free-kick.

Newcastle took the game by the scruff of the neck after that with Alan Shearer and Craig Bellamy both getting on the scoresheet.

Bolton have now failed to win in their last six league games.

Jaaskelainen had to look alert in the 17th minute to block a shot from Bellamy after Solano had cleverly threaded the ball through.

Dean Holdsworth then found himself clear on goal for Bolton but he took too much time and Andy O'Brien took the ball off his toes.

The home side broke forward again in the 21st minute when Holdsworth released Hansen.

With only Shay Given to beat, it seemed he must score. However he somehow managed to miss the target from six yards out.

Bolton were exposed in the 26th minute when Bellamy again broke clear after Robert played the ball down the channel.

Jaaskelainen stood tall to block Bellamy's effort for the second time in the game.

Newcastle opened the scoring three minutes before the break following a fine build-up.

Robbie Elliott delivered a deep cross from the left to Shearer, lurking at the back post.

He headed it back across the face of the goal to Solano, who needed only the slightest touch to score.

Bolton almost pulled level a minute into the second half when Nicky Southall rattled in a 20-yard shot but Given was equal to it.

The match took a dramatic twist in the 60th minute when Jaaskelainen was sent off.

Robert curled in a free-kick for the second and Bellamy should have added a third, only to fire wide from close range after Elliott had driven the ball forward.

Hansen then made a fine point-blank save from Bellamy after Solano had delivered the cross.

Newcastle stepped up the pace against the 10 men of Bolton and O'Brien rattled the crossbar with a header.

Shearer added the third goal in the 71st minute with a trademark header from Robert's cross.

Then the Newcastle skipper supplied Bellamy for the fourth six minutes from time.

Shearer should have scored a fifth, only to drag his shot wide, but these are worrying times for Bolton after a superb start to the season.
