Premiership: Keane pledges 100% support for PFA strike

Manchester United captain Roy Keane has pledged 100% support for the Professional Footballers’ Association over its proposed strike action.

The PFA is considering calling a strike if the Premier League doesn’t distribute a larger portion of television revenue to the PFA’s funds.

The Premier League has seen television profits soar in recent years, but the proportion of money it distributes to players has not risen accordingly.

The PFA uses this money as a pension fund for retired players, to pay for treatment for injured players and to find alternative careers for footballers who are forced to leave the game early.

Speaking on television today, Roy Keane said: "Nobody wants to go on strike, but I will be 100% behind the union no matter what they decide."

Keane earns in excess of £70,000 a week, but he said his stance on the issue is a show of solidarity with less fortunate players.

"Premiership players are well rewarded," he said, "but what about those in the lower leagues, past players and young kids who have their careers ended by injury?"
