O'Neill hit with one-match suspension

Celtic manager Martin O’Neill has been hit with a one-match suspension following his sending-off in Turin on Tuesday night.

O’Neill hurled abuse at referee Hellmut Krug after he awarded Juventus a decisive penalty with just two minutes remaining of the Champions League Group E opener.

O’Neill was furious with Nicola Amoruso’s theatrical dive and let his feelings known to the German official.

An emotional O’Neill was led away from the pitch by the fourth official before the Italians made it 3-2 from the resulting spotkick.

But O’Neill’s misery increased this afternoon as UEFA imposed a ban which will see him forced to watch his side from the stand for Tuesday’s game against Porto at Parkhead.

UEFA’s control and disciplinary body statement read: ‘‘Mr O Neill may of course attend the next UEFA Champions League match of Celtic FC against FC Porto as a normal spectator in the stands.

‘‘However, his presence before and during the match in the dressing rooms, in the technical area, on the playing field or in the players tunnel is not allowed, as well as any communication during the course of the match with his team.’’

UEFA’s control and disciplinary body also rejected a protest lodged by Celtic FC asking for the revocation of the yellow card shown to defender Joos Valgaeren in the 89th minute of the Turin clash.
