Premiership: Beckham talks 'going well'

David Beckham’s contract talks with Manchester United are going well, according to the club’s chief executive Peter Kenyon.

David Beckham’s contract talks with Manchester United are going well, according to the club’s chief executive Peter Kenyon.

Newspaper reports suggested the England captain would not sign a new deal at Old Trafford until the new manager of the club is known.

Sir Alex Ferguson has already announced he will step down from the job at the end of the season, but his replacement has not yet been confirmed, which would leave Beckham’s future uncertain if the story is accurate.

But Kenyon said there were no problems with the talks and said:

"We’ve had several discussions with David’s advisors and they’ve been progressing well.

‘‘I think as we all know, we would love David to stay at Manchester United and David’s made the same noises about that.

‘‘With regards to the weekend press and what was said there we have no knowledge of that being the case. We’re still hopeful and meetings are still scheduled for the near future.’’

Beckham will have just one year left on his current contract when Ferguson quits as manager in the summer.
