Soccer: Venables in the running for Greece job

Terry Venables has a "good chance" of becoming the new national coach of Greece, according to a spokesman for the Greek Football Association.

The former England boss is one of five candidates under consideration for the post.

He is in Athens today for talks regarding the vacant job.

Panos Korodilos, chief press officer for the Greek Football Association, said: "I think his chances are good.

"There is a meeting with Mr Venables today and there is a meeting tomorrow with Nevio Scala.

"Mr Venables is very experienced and a well-known coach, nobody can doubt his experience and qualities."

As well as Venables and Italian Scala, the Greek FA have also spoken to German Otto Rehhagel, Spaniard Javier Clemente and Italian Marco Tardelli.

If Venables got the job, he would come up against England in one of his first matches - the World Cup qualifier at Old Trafford on September 5.

"It makes it interesting but I don't think Greece has many chances (to qualify)," Korodilos said.

"Whoever gets the job will prepare the team for the 2004 Olympics (in Greece). That will be his main job."
