Premiership: McIlroy happy with Carroll's Utd move
Sammy McIlroy feels Roy Carroll's £2.5m move to Manchester United can only be good for the player and Northern Ireland.
Carroll rang McIlroy to inform him he was going to United from Wigan and the Northern Irish manager believes he is making the right move in joining his former club.
McIlroy believes Carroll will learn an enormous amount working as Fabien Barthez's understudy and he is certain the 23-year-old will play his fair share of matches for the Premiership champions.
"I spoke to Roy a couple of days ago and he told me he was going to United," he said. "He needed to leave Wigan and I think he had gone about as far as he could there and this move will benefit him enormously.
"He will be at the best club in the land and the experience he will get there working with Barthez will be great.
"He will also play a fair few games, there's no doubt about that, and he won't just be sitting on the bench."
McIlroy is delighted from his own point of view and Carroll's move coupled with Mark Taylor's promotion to the Premiership with Fulham means both his goalkeepers will be in the top flight next season.
