Copa America: Wanchope makes his mark again
Costa Rica continued their impressive run in the Copa America with a crushing 4-0 victory over a disappointing Bolivia.
Manchester City striker Paulo Wanchope was again their inspiration, with two more goals that make him the tournament’s leading scorer with four.
Further strikes from Steven Bryce and Rolando Fonseca rounded off the night for Alexander Guimaraes’ side, who are now likely to finish as winners of Group C and avoid Brazil in the last eight.
Bolivia not only failed to pick up a point in their three games but also didn’t manage to score and coach Carlos Aragones is likely to pay the price with the sack in the coming days.
Amado Guevara’s 85th-minute winner was enough to defeat nine-man Uruguay and guarantee Honduras’ place in the quarter-finals.
However, Uruguay’s disappointment at losing will be tempered by the fact that the defeat means they will now face Costa Rica rather than Brazil in the last eight.
A 0-0 scoreline would have seen Honduras play Costa Rica but to their credit they continued to attack knowing that a goal would mean facing Luis Scolari’s tournament favourites.
The only goal of the game came courtesy of a neat one-two between Guevara and Jorge Caballero with the Honduras skipper making no mistake with a clinical finish past Uruguay keeper Adrian Berbia.
Honduras’ qualification means that Ecuador are eliminated as they had the worst record of the three teams finishing third in their respective groups.
