Premiership: Southgate signs for Boro

Gareth Southgate has ended his Aston Villa agony by clinching a £6.5m move to Middlesbrough.

The 30-year-old defender has been looking to leave Villa Park for more than 12 months.

Southgate has signed a four-year deal after passing a medical at the Riverside Stadium.

Boro chief executive Keith Lamb said: "We're delighted Gareth has joined us.

"He sees joining Middlesbrough as a career move and this is a demonstration of Steve McClaren's ambition and also his ability to attract top players, particularly those who share his values."

Southgate trained with his new team-mates this morning and met up again with Steve Harrison, who last week completed his own move from Villa Park.

Harrison had been Gregory's number two but moved to Boro to take up the post of first-team coach.

Southgate will be presented to the media at Boro's Rockcliffe Park training headquarters tomorrow at 1.30pm.
