Soccer: Whitley loses tug of war for McIlroy

Sammy McIlroy lost a tug of war with Manchester City over Jeff Whitley when the midfielder pulled out of Northern Ireland’s World Cup squad on the advice of his club.

Whitley had been doubtful for Saturday’s game against Bulgaria at Windsor Park after he suffered a gash in his knee 10 days ago.
