Soccer: Solskjaer’s staying put

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is happy to stay at Manchester United despite Ruud van Nistelrooy’s imminent arrival - while Teddy Sheringham is still pondering his future.

Solskjaer has no desire to leave United even though the signing of van Nistelrooy means he will probably be spending even more time on the bench.

He feels signing the Dutch international has given everyone at Old Trafford a lift and he intends to learn from the £19m striker.

"I think it’s great for the team and it’s great for him that he’s signed," said Solskjaer.

"It gives everyone a boost. You learn from the best and he’s one of the best strikers in Europe, maybe the world, and I want to learn from him.

"From what I’ve seen and heard, he is a fantastic player. You can see from his goals that he’s a class finisher."

Solskjaer’s positive mood contrasted with that of Sheringham and the England striker has still to decide where he will be playing next season.

Sheringham’s current one-year deal expires in the summer and so far he has not taken up the club’s offer of a new 12-month agreement, believed to be worth £35,000-a-week.

The 35-year-old double Footballer of the Year claims he wants to stay at United, but he has been strongly linked with a move back to London to either Fulham or Tottenham.

Sheringham said: "Nothing is agreed with United at the moment and we are still waiting to hear from them really.

"There’s a lot of speculation about, but I can’t do anything about that and all I’m doing at the moment is negotiating with Man United."
