Premiership: Ferguson confident over Sheringham's new deal

Sir Alex Ferguson is confident Teddy Sheringham will agree a new contract with Manchester United to keep him at Old Trafford next season.

Sheringham's current 12-month deal expires in the summer and the player is locked in talks with United over a new deal.

Originally Sheringham had wanted a two-year agreement, but hinted that a one-year deal might be acceptable.

Ferguson is optimistic the remaining details can be ironed out and he said: "The truth of the matter is that the club have met his representative and I think that they've had a good dialogue.

"I don't see any great problem, I don't think."

As well as Sheringham, United hope to agree new terms with Denis Irwin and Raimond van der Gouw, who are also out of contract in the summer.

The champions elect also want David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Gary and Phil Neville to commit their long-term futures to Old Trafford.

The five are next on United's contract hit list following their success in agreeing new contracts with Andy Cole, Jaap Stam and Ryan Giggs.
