Soccer: Publican joins battle to get Best back on the wagon

Former football hero, George Best, is once again battling against alcoholism at his home in Co Down.

A local publican and friend has pleaded with other pub owners not to serve him drink while his doctors in London want him to return there for treatment.

Best, who is 54, has been warned that drinking again, even a little could cost him his life.

His London doctor, Professor Roger Williams, says the former Manchester United star has stayed away from alcohol for the past year with only the very occasional lapse.

He is now advising that Best returns to London for more treatment after reports that he has fallen off the wagon.

He cancelled two public appearances within the past week, including an Old Trafford charity dinner.

Yesterday, George Best's home on the Ards peninsular was besieged by reported and photographers, although irate neighbours have been pleading with them to leave him alone with his wife Alex.
