Premiership: Stam relieved with one point

Jaap Stam claimed Manchester United were happy with a point after drawing 1-1 with Leeds at Elland Road.

A mistake by Nigel Martyn allowed Luke Chadwick to side-foot the visitors into the lead, only for a wonderful header from Mark Viduka to salvage a point for the home team.

Manchester United almost came away with nothing at all when Wes Brown put through his own goal again, but it was given offside.

"In every game we need to work hard because everyone wants to beat us," said Stam.

"It's a derby so there's a lot of rivalry. We were glad to get the point.

"You know it's going to be hard, you know they (Leeds) will chase every ball.

"The second half was better than first half but unfortunately, at the end, they got the equaliser."

Stam claimed the linesman was right to rule out Brown's own goal but said he did not see the incident at the end of the first half when Fabien Barthez was adjudged to have fouled Ian Harte in the penalty area.

Barthez escaped with a yellow card from referee Graham Barber before producing a fine save to send the teams into half-time goalless.

Despite being one of several United player who complained bitterly to the referee, Stam told Sky TV: "I didn't see it really, we were walking back up the pitch and then I saw a Leeds player lying on the ground."
