Premiership: Sheringham seeks two-year deal

Teddy Sheringham is seeking a two-year deal with Manchester United.

Sheringham's agent Barry Nevill will outline the striker's terms when he sits down with United's negotiating team in the next fortnight.

The 34-year-old feels his 18 goals this season prove he can carry on at the top level with United for two more years.

His demand could prove a sticking point. Up to now United have never offered a player of Sheringham's age more than a one-year deal, and last summer the England international signed a 12-month agreement.

Nevill said: "We have arranged a meeting for the beginning of next month.

"Teddy would prefer a longer contract, and we will have to wait and see what United offer."

Sheringham has become hot property following his return to top form this season, and there are a number of Premiership and Nationwide clubs who would love to sign him.

Fulham have long been linked with Sheringham, while at the weekend there were reports of a £6m bid from Middlesbrough.

Sheringham has always said he does not want to leave Old Trafford, but Nevill stressed he is keeping his options open for now.

"Obviously we have to look at all the options and we don't know what Manchester United are going to offer yet," he said.

"Until we know that, we can't discard anything."

Sir Alex Ferguson, whose last-ditch intervention persuaded Sheringham to stay in the summer, will have a keen eye on the negotiations and he is desperate for the former Tottenham hit man to stay.

"Teddy has had an outstanding year and along with Andy Cole he has proved himself this year," said the United manager.

"It's always been on the cards that we would talk to Teddy.

"It's been said many, many times we would be offering Teddy a new contract."
