Nationwide Division One: Bassett for QPR

Queens Park Rangers have reportedly asked Dave Bassett to lead their First Division survival bid for the rest of the season.

Rangers' move comes after the weekend resignation of Gerry Francis, despite a win that dragged the Shepherd's Bush outfit away from the bottom three of Nationwide Division One.

Bassett made a name for himself throughout the 70s and 80s as the manager who first brought Wimbledon out of non-league football into the Football League - before steering them all the way to the top flight.

He then turned Sheffield United from a struggling Third Division outfit into Premiership mainstays.

The move comes after former Chelsea assistant manager Graham Rix confirmed he had been approached about the job.
