Wexford Youths scrape through after going 5-0 up against game Galway
Wexford had the ideal start scoring within two minutes as Aidan Keenan was afforded space in front of goal to glide home the ball at the near post past a stranded keeper Kevin Hogan.
Not for the first time during this opening period played in horrendous rain, thunder, and lightning, the Youths threatened the visitors’ goal scoring twice in the space of a minute.
Danny Furlong, back into the side following his absence, marked his 27th-minute introduction for the injured Aidan Kennan with a goal from close range after 38 minutes, while one minute later it was Conor Whittle who fired home from just inside the area, making it 3-0 at the interval.
Caretaker boss Leo Tierney’s worries increased when the homeside added another two goals through Andy O’Connor after 50 minutes, while two minutes later Furlong added his second.
After sixty-one minutes Kevin Devaney pulled a goal back with a right- footed shot from the left edge of area. After 67 minutes Aidan Friel put through his own goal, with Devaney making it 5-3 four minutes later. The Galway resurgence was to continue, as Conor Melody made it 5-4 after 74 minutes, but there it ended.
