EFL Cup round-up: Marc Wilson nets the winner as Cherries edge past Morecambe

Bournemouth registered their first win of the season as Marc Wilson’s fine strike saw them overcome League Two table-toppers Morecambe 2-1 at the Globe Arena and move into the EFL Cup third round.

Republic of Ireland defender Wilson marked his first appearance since re-joining the Cherries last week with his first club goal since December 2010 as he fired in from considerable range in the 54th minute.

That was after Morecambe had swiftly cancelled out Max Gradel’s eighth-minute opener through Cole Stockton, and then almost gone ahead in first-half stoppage time when Tom Barkhuizen hit the post.

There were several nervy moments for a much-changed Bournemouth side, with Morecambe also connecting with the woodwork in the dying seconds via Ryan Edwards’ header.

But Cherries boss Eddie Howe, who made 10 changes in total to his starting XI, will be pleased simply to get a win on the board after opening the season with back-to-back Premier League losses.

Elsewhere, Adnan Januzaj’s first goal for Sunderland handed David Moyes his maiden competitive victory as the Black Cats edged past League One Shrewsbury.

The 21-year-old needed 83 minutes of a largely turgid cup-tie to find his range, blasting a right-footed shot past keeper Jayson Leutwiler to spare a crowd of just 13,979 at the Stadium of Light further punishment on a night when victory was the only option.

Having admitted his side is likely to be involved in another relegation battle after a pointless start to the Premier League campaign, Moyes may have welcomed the distraction of a cup game against lower league opposition, although injuries and a stagnant transfer market meant he was unable to opt for the now customary wholesale change in his line-up.

Only keeper Jordan Pickford, who would have deputised for Vito Mannone even if he had not been injured, and midfielder Wahbi Khazri were not involved in Sunday’s 2-1 home defeat by Middlesbrough, and the bench had a distinctly youthful look about it with Ethan, Tommy and Josh Robson all named among the substitutes.

Meanwhile, Matthew Pearson hit the winner as Accrington Stanley beat Premier League side Burnley 1-0 after extra-time while Fulhan beat Middlesbourough 2-1.
