First Division round-up: Limerick maintain march
Georgie Kelly scored the first of his brace on 28 minutes, latching onto Ryan Swan’s through ball before lobbing over goalkeeper Paul Hunt.
Shane O’Connor came close to equalising approaching the break when he drilled wide but Cobh couldn’t turn their territorial dominance into a goal and Kelly sealed the points seven minutes from full-time, heading home from a corner.
Waterford United made it back-to-back victories by seeing off Cabinteely 2-0 at Stradbrook.
Following a scrappy opening 45 minutes, the Blues took control by scoring twice in nine minutes. First, David O’Leary broke the deadlock with a 51st-minute volley before league stalwart Philip Gorman rose high to nod in the second on the hour.
The early march of Limerick was maintained as they steamrolled past Athlone Town 5-0. Paudie O’Connor and Robbie Williams had Limerick two goals to the good at the break in the midlands before John O’Flynn, Lee-Jay Lynch, and skipper Shane Duggan completed the rout.
Jamie Doyle scored twice as Shelbourne overcame Drogheda United 3-0 at Tolka Park for their first league win of the season.
The contest was closer than the scoreline suggests as Drogheda missed a few presentable chances with Doyle’s double sandwiching a Gavin Boyne strike.
