OBITUARY: Paul Bannon, striker turned title-winning centre-back with Cork City FC

When Paul Bannon, who died last month at the age of 59, joined Cork City at the start of the 1989-90 season, he was signed as a centre-forward.

The son of former Tipperary hurler Séamus, he came to Cork in August ’89 via the Netherlands and Greece after having lined out for six English league clubs, including Carlisle United and Bristol Rovers.
