Premier League veteran Micky Adams ready for a new challenge at Sligo
“We have a big game on Saturday against Cork,” says the latest Bit O’Red boss, who has described his new post as “a challenging job”.
In a long and varied managerial career, the 53-year-old ex-Southampton player has reached the heights of the Premier League with Leicester City and plummeted to the low of being unable to keep Tranmere Rovers in the English league last season. But the SSE Airtricity League will definitely be a new experience for him.
“I don’t know the league particularly well,” he admits. “I have been over before to play in some pre-season friendlies and you always get a competitive game. It is a competitive league. What we have to do now is try to push ourselves up that league.”
Adams revealed that he had spoken with the former Sligo management team of John Coleman and Jimmy Bell before taking up his new role in Ireland.
“The appointment came about quickly,” he says. “I spoke to John and Jimmy at Accrington Stanley, and they said it was a great club. I am really looking forward to getting started. I have visited the Showgrounds and the facilities the club has here are first-class. I can’t wait to get stuck into the challenge.”
The new manager also insists that he is not daunted by taking over at a club which currently finds itself second from bottom in the top flight.
“I’m not (daunted), because you tend to normally get jobs at clubs when things are not going well,” he points out.
“There are a lot of good managers waiting for an opportunity and the challenge at Sligo Rovers is one I wanted to take on. They have had a lot of English managers that have come across and done well in the past. Things have not gone great for them this year. We have to pick up points and move up the table.
“For me and for everyone else this is a fresh start. I’m looking forward to getting back on the training ground – that is where the hard work is done. What has gone on in the past is gone and we will only be looking forward.”
Adams has appointed his former Tranmere sidekick Alan Rogers as his assistant manager at the Showgrounds.
Cork City boss John Caulfield is confident his side will be able to get something out of Saturday night’s trip to Sligo. “We are in good form and I think if we play to our potential that we are capable of winning the game,” said the Cork boss.
Caulfield has been boosted by the news that John Kavanagh is back in training as he recovers from injury.
Meanwhile, it has been announced that Cork City’s Premier Division game against Shamrock Rovers in Tallaght on Monday August 17 (kick off 7.05pm) and their FAI Cup game against St Patrick’s Athletic at Turner’s Cross on Friday August 21 (kick off 7.25pm) will both be screened live on RTÉ2.
