Martin O’Neill has indicated that, even if Ireland fail to qualify for Euro 2016, there is a distinct possibility that he and the FAI would agree he should stay on as Ireland manager for the 2018 World Cup campaign.

After conducting yesterday’s FAI Cup draw on the eve of the association’s AGM in Sligo today, O’Neill was asked if, even in the event of Ireland’s current qualification campaign coming up short, he might feel he has seen enough progress in the squad’s development to inspire him to want to go again.

“Yeah, exactly,” he replied. “If you’re an international manager, obviously results are the be-all and end-all of everything. But if you feel you are making a commitment and you just have the one competition and you get in and get out, I wouldn’t be totally sure that’s the right thing.
