Injured Long gets contract extension

There was some consolation for Burnley’s stricken Cork man Kevin Long yesterday with news of a contract extension being granted to the centre-back.

Injured Long gets contract extension

Having waited all season for his Premier League debut, Long’s first taste of top-flight action on Thursday ended after just 20 minutes.

The former Cork City defender had been introduced as a sub at Newcastle United only to suffer a serious knee injury that required him to be stretchered off.

Though results of a hospital scan were awaited last night, it is understand the 24-year-old could be facing up to a four-month lay-off. Fortunately for the Leesider, talks on a new contract had reached a successful conclusion in advance of his cruel blow at St James’ Park.

His current deal is due to expire in the summer and the new terms mean he’ll remain at Turf Moor for at least another two years.

Long moved to Burnley from Cork City in November 2009. After making 11 appearances in their promotion-clinching campaign last season, he’s had to be patient for his chance this term.

Sean Dyche’s latest demonstration of his faith in the centre-back ensures there’ll be more opportunities when he recovers from this setback.
