Roma turn on the style as CSKA Moscow humiliated

Roma opened their Champions League Group E campaign in style with a 5-1 mauling of Russian side CSKA Moscow at the Stadio Olimpico.

Gervinho set up Juan Manuel Iturbe’s opener and then scored twice himself in the first half, sandwiching a goal from Maicon, after the Brazilian full-back overcame an injury scare in the warm-up.

Sergey Ignashevich’s own goal extended the margin further and Ahmed Musa’s consolation was of no consequence.

Barcelona opened their Champions League campaign with victory over an Apoel Nicosia side featuring Ireland’s Cillian Sheridan, although the 1-0 result will have done little to worry their Group F rivals. The Primera Division side wasted chance after chance at the Nou Camp, with Gerard Pique’s first-half header all that separated the two sides in the end.

And with a trip to French champions Paris St Germain next up for Barca, Luis Enrique’s men will need to perform much better if they are to maintain their proud record in the competition.

Lasse Schone’s equaliser denied Zlatan Ibrahimovic victory on his old stomping ground as Ajax held Paris St Germain to a 1-1 Champions League draw.

Edinson Cavani blasted his 28th goal in 50 PSG appearances to hand the Frenchmen the lead but Denmark winger Schone levelled the match with Ajax’s first shot on target, just when PSG were hoping to join Barca on top of Group F.

In Group H, Yacine Brahimi’s hat-trick helped Porto set a new club-record Champions League victory in a 6-0 thumping of BATE Borisov.

The outclassed Belarus side had no answers to Algeria midfielder Brahimi, with Jackson Martinez, Adrian Lopez and Vincent Aboubakar also on the scoresheet.

Athletic Bilbao and Shakhtar played out a goalless draw in Spain in the other Group H game.

In Chelsea’s Group G, Luka Zahovic stole a dramatic equaliser in Maribor’s 1-1 home draw with Sporting Lisbon. Former Manchester United midfielder Nani gave Sporting the lead with 10 minutes left before Zahovic’s equaliser.
