At 28, the winger has belatedly arrived in the Premier League where he has been impressing this season for Everton, while his two goals for Ireland against Georgia on Sunday not only delivered three crucial European Championship qualifying points but also went a long way to silencing the criticism that, even at his relatively advanced age, he is often more about promise than delivery.

“You see the sort of talent he possesses,” says the Ireland manager. “I know, I gave him his debut for Celtic. He was excellent. He was mesmerising in a Champions League game against AC Milan and you’d have thought things were going to kick on. I think he definitely needs managers to believe in him.
