Older Liverpool fans may remember how the Soviet champions Dynamo Tbilisi knocked them out of the European Cup in 1979, with a 3-0 home win after going down 2-1 at Anfield.

The following season, when Liverpool became European champions by beating Real Madrid in Paris, Dynamo won the Cup Winners’ Cup, Georgia’s first and only success in an international competition.
