Rodgers believes Pool can be champs

Brendan Rodgers insists his Liverpool squad will be even better equipped to challenge for the Premier League title next season, fuelled by the belief that they can make a serious bid to end their long wait to be champions.

Rodgers believes Pool can be champs

Liverpool missed out on a first title since 1990 by only three points as a final-day win over Newcastle United at Anfield was not enough to stop Manchester City finishing top.

But having pushed City all the way, Rodgers is ready to strengthen his squad over the summer to try and improve by a place to end what will have become a quarter of a century wait to reclaim property Liverpool used to claim as rightfully theirs.

“We have got back to where the club should be,” said Rodgers.

“People have looked at us and asked ‘have we coped with the pressure?’ I think 12 wins out of 14 shows that we clearly have.

“It’s been a wonderful adventure for us. We have scored 100 goals, which is a remarkable achievement. We know the areas we need to improve on and we will be better.

“We will come back mentally and technically ready for next season. It’s a young group and we will add more players to be ready to fight again. We will strengthen and be better next season. And now we have got that belief.”

Rodgers revealed he re-read a letter he received from a supporter on the eve of the season, urging Liverpool to think not only of Champions League qualification but to aim for the title.

And the Liverpool manager underlined his determination to repay the faith rekindled amongst the supporters this season.

He added: “Probably at the time, the players and maybe the staff all thought the letter was maybe far-fetched.

“But I truly believe we could progress… The word now is belief, belief that we can be up there challenging.

“It’s been a wonderful campaign for our growth and development. It’s been incredible to see the supporters and to see the power of the club and the institution that is Liverpool.

“I think we have made them dream and that’s our job to do that and the great thing is we will improve.”
