PSG complete €64m Cavani capture
Cavani had been linked with a host of European clubs this summer, with Manchester City and Real Madrid also rumoured to be interested in the Uruguyan forward.
However, the French champions had stepped up their pursuit in the last week and announced the much-anticipated news on their official website that they had signed their man this afternoon.
“The arrival of Edinson Cavani demonstrates the ability of the club to attract the best players in the world,” said PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi.
“The player seduced by our project is pleased to join an ambitious and eager to take on new challenges team.
“We are particularly pleased to offer the Parisian public a player of immense talent and one who is coveted everywhere.”
Cavani spke of his desire to win major honours with his new employers.
“I’d like to thank everyone who made this transfer possible, it’s a great project,” he said.
“I’d also like to thank the people in Napoli who went out of their way to make it possible.
“I come here with lots of joy, lots of confidence, lots of hunger and lots of motivation to win major trophies.”
Cavani has been in sparkling form since joining Napoli from their Italian rivals Palermo in July 2010, scoring 104 goals in just 138 appearances.
He was particularly prolific last season with 29 goals to help the Naples club finish second in Serie A, while his tally helped him win the Capocannoniere, which rewards the league’s top scorer.
The 26-year-old is just the latest big-money signing for the free-spending Parisiens, who have recruited Zlatan Ibrahimovic — Cavani’s likely strike partner, who hit 30 goals and was named Ligue 1 player of the year last season — Marco Verratti, Ezequiel Lavezzi, Lucas Moura, Javier Pastore and Thiago Silva in recent years.
