Limerick comeback stuns the Lilywhites

Limerick produced a rousing second-half showing to overturn a two-goal deficit and claim a 3-2 win against Dundalk on Saturday evening.

Limerick comeback stuns the Lilywhites

Fourth in the table Dundalk, who defeated leaders St Patrick’s Athletic last time out, opened positively and were deservedly ahead on eight minutes courtesy of Kurtis Byrne.

A Dane Massey free-kick doubled Dundalk’s advantage approaching half-time, leaving the home side with a proverbial mountain to climb at the break. But climb they did.

Shane Tracey kick started the revival with a goal from a trademark free-kick on 55 minutes.

Thereafter, substitute Rory Gaffney, on the field less than 10 seconds, delivered the equaliser with his first touch, poking a Tracey free to the net.

Craig Curran’s winner nine minutes from the end, after David O’Leary’s initial effort was well smothered, sealed a sterling second-half effort from Stuart Taylor’s charges.

The win, Limerick’s first in six games, moves the Shannonsiders into the top half of the table.

Limerick return to action tonight at Thomond Park as they welcome high-flying Sligo Rovers for the quarter-final of the EA Sports Cup.

The Westerners enter the tie following a hugely comprehensive 2-0 victory away to Shelbourne on Friday evening.

Cork City travel to holders Drogheda United, while reigning FAI Ford Cup champions Derry City are also on the road having been drawn away to Bohemians.

All ties kick-off at 7.45pm.
