Clarke hails ‘proud’ Irish star Long

West Brom boss Steve Clark was “surprised” Shane Long was not selected to start in either of the World Cup qualifiers but says there is no way the Tipperary man will let that effect his performance against Manchester City tomorrow.

“I’m surprised but it is not my job to pick the Irish team,” said the Scot.

“Mr Trapattoni picks the team he wants. In a way it is good Shane didn’t play because he comes back here reasonably fresh.”

According to Clark the attitude of the 25-year-old is exemplary and the Italian manager decisions will not affect the Tipperary man in the slightest.

“I have never seen Shane disgruntled,” said the Baggies head coach.

“He has a great personality and takes it on the chin. He will be there for his country if they need him.

“He is a proud patriotic Irishman and happy to go and if he is called upon, he is ready to play for him.”
