Former Republic of Ireland captain Roy Keane believes that under pressure Giovanni Trapattoni has given himself “breathing space” after the win in the Faroe Islands.

Pressure has been growing on Trapattoni following last week’s hammering at the hands of Germany.

Keane said: “He has done well for Ireland and he deserves his chance. But he needed that result just to give him a little bit of breathing space because no matter what happened the other night, they lost to a top team in Germany.
