In a revealing press conferencefollowing his team’s 2-0 home defeat to Arsenal, the new Liverpool manager admitted he would not have allowed England forward Andy Carroll to leave Anfield had he known he would not have been allowed to press on with the signing of Clint Dempsey on Friday.

The USA international eventually signed for Tottenham for £6m (€7.5m) after Liverpool offered aderisory £3m (€3.7m) for Dempsey.
