Transfer watch

There was not the usual glint in Alex Ferguson’s eye when he insisted on Friday Alexander Buttner, pictured, was his final capture of the summer.

The Dutch left-back became United’s fifth signing of the transfer window, following Robin van Persie, Shinji Kagawa, Nick Powell and Angelo Henriquez. He still hopes to find a home for Dimitar Berbatov and Federico Macheda may also be on his way, while Nani’s omission from the squad for the 3-2 win over Fulham will increase speculation about his future. The Portuguese has two years remaining on his current contract and no prospect of an extension but United are unlikely to consider selling. United have carried an interest in Fulham’s Moussa Dembele but Martin Jol is confident he will be able to keep hold of the Belgian midfielder. Clint Dempsey is another matter. The American has another year left on his contract and is training on his own after Fulham reported Liverpool to the Premier League over claims over an illegal approach. Jol wants another couple of additions before the deadline but says he will only sell Dempsey on his terms.
