No expense spared as Ibrahimovic joins PSG

Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s move to Paris St Germain from AC Milan has seen him extend his lead on Nicolas Anelka as the most expensive player in history, based on cumulative transfer fees.

The much-travelled Swede has now been transferred for an eye-watering tally of €188.3m, €44.6m ahead of another frequent mover in Anelka, who’s combined tally stands at €143.7m.

Argentine duo Hernan Crespo (€135.1m) and Juan Sebastian Veron (€130.7m) are third and fourth respectively with Cristiano Ronaldo (€124.6m) making up the top five ahead of his Brazilian name-sake in sixth (€112.8m).

Ireland’s Robbie Keane is also in the top 10, coming in at seventh, having been transferred for a total outlay of €109.2m.

Christian Vieri (€97.8m), Samuel Eto’o (€95m) and Robinho (€95m) make up the top 10.

It’s hard to see anyone challenging Ibrahimovic’s position at the top though, although his focus at his unveiling yesterday was on the future with his new club.

“I’m finally here in Paris,” he said. “It’s a dream which has become reality, for me, it’s a big step in my career. Playing for PSG is an incredible thing.

“It’s a beautiful project and one I’m happy to be a part of.

“I am here to win with this incredible squad and we want to win against all opposition we come up against.

“We’re looking forward and thinking only of winning, which is the most important thing. At PSG I can play with the best in the world, elsewhere that couldn’t happen. I want to give my all for this squad which is the future of European football.”
