Lucky escape for pair pulled from NY subway track

Two Irish soccer fans had a lucky escape in New York after falling onto a subway track following the Ireland versus Croatia match.

The unnamed fans — one male and one female — were lifted from the tracks by two fellow commuters.

Both were believed to be drinking with friends before the incident and were acting carelessly close to the edge of the platform.

Upon seeing the two revellers fall onto the track, the rescuers — both male — jumped off the platform to help them back to safety, before hoisting themselves back up.

The incident occurred on the uptown 1/2/3 platform at Time Square following Ireland’s opening game on Sunday.

The female victim experienced head injuries and was kept conscious by friends fanning her, before being treated for her injuries. The male was uninjured, but was in a visible state of shock.

Immediately after the incident, one of the rescuers told jalopnik.com that he wanted to ensure the girl was fine after the accident.

“For a minute you just think ‘Jesus Christ’ and I did not even think. You do not even think and I jumped down. I just wanted to make sure she was okay,” he said.

“That is what’s great about New York. We can shove each other on the subway, but when it comes down to it, we just get down to it and I felt like I was already taking too long.”

The injured couple, both living in Yonkers, New York, were treated by paramedics at the subway station.
