Blues eye move to iconic landmark

Chelsea could soon be playing in a new home built around a redeveloped Battersea Power Station after submitting a bid to buy the 39-acre site.

The Blues announced plans to build “one of the most iconic football stadiums in the world” yesterday. The 60,000-seater ground, which would take between three and four years to construct, would include the power station’s four chimneys and other aspects of the existing structure as part of the design.

Chelsea are not the only bidders for the site, which was valued at £500m (€615m) in October and was put up for sale two months later amid an administration saga. The Blues maintain they have yet to decide whether to relocate but insist it is not economically viable to redevelop Stamford Bridge.

“Our joint bid was submitted in accordance with the sales process established by the joint administrators for the site,” a statement read.

“We are not the only interested parties and there is no certainty that we will be successful.

“Working with architects and planning experts, we have developed a plan to preserve all the significant aspects of Battersea Power Station.”
