Ferguson: Luck was with us
Rangers had Shaun Derry sent off after just 13 minutes for a challenge on Ashley Young despite the United winger being in an offside position and there appearing to be minimal contact.
Wayne Rooney scored from the resulting penalty and Paul Scholes added a second midway through the second period as United clocked up an eighth consecutive victory.
Ferguson said: “I thought it was offside. I have to say Ashley was a yard offside so I can understand Mark being angry and disappointed in that.
“I think the boy had a little tug on Ashley. Not a great deal but enough to get us a penalty. It’s unfortunate but being the last defender he had to be sent off.”
Ferguson acknowledged his team can play far better but he feels victories are all that count at this stage of the campaign.
He added: “I’m pleased with that. There’s good consistency in terms of the defending. There are only six left now, three at home and three away, and hopefully we can run it out now.”
QPR manager Mark Hughes was furious with Mason and confirmed he will appeal against Derry’s suspension.
Hughes said: “We’re desperately disappointed with the performance of the referee for the vast majority of the game, not just that one incident.
“It was clear the initial run was offside, challenge was minimal contact the boy has gone over too easily. These are massive decisions that affect people’s livelihoods. It’s affecting too many people that correct decisions aren’t being made. You do discuss that before every game and it shouldn’t be like that.”
