Canaries flying again as Wolves’ woes grow

Wolves’ current plight at the bottom of the table is hurting the players as much as the fans, according to midfielder Dave Edwards.

The Black Country side are four points from safety at the foot of the Premier League and have just eight games left to stave off relegation.

Wolves’ latest defeat came at Carrow Road on Saturday, where Grant Holt’s brace helped Norwich come from behind to secure a 2-1 victory.

Terry Connor’s side had taken the lead through Matt Jarvis but conceded a leveller one minute later, which Edwards concedes was not good enough from Wolves.

“After going one-goal up, we really shot ourselves in the foot within in a minute,” he said.

“We let ourselves down really and then to concede a goal just before half-time, like we have done in the last few weeks, is just not good enough, on our part.

“We’ve got to be playing better and creating more chances.

“We have definitely got to be doing better as a team at defending.

“It does [really hurt]. Obviously the fans came in their thousands and were brilliant.

“We know how much it means to them, we know how much it means to the owners, the manager and everyone involved with the club.

“We try our best every week and sometimes the quality might not be there, but you can never kind of have a go at us for effort.

“We really want to keep this club in the Premier League and we will fight down to the wire.

“I know people say it is over for us at the moment, but we are going to fight to the wire and hopefully do enough to keep up in the league.”

Wolves have now won just once in 16 league matches and face a vital clash with fellow strugglers Bolton next weekend.

“It is an absolutely huge game next week against Bolton and it really is a must win,” Edwards added.

“If we can win that, it gets us back in the pack and we can kick on from there.

“We just have to really concentrate hard on getting ourselves right this week and in a good frame of mind for Saturday.

“We will have the fans behind us at Molineux and hopefully we can get a victory.”

While Wolves continue to teeter dangerously over the precipice, Norwich are all but assured of their place in the top flight next season.

Saturday’s victory leaves them 14 points clear of the bottom three and came after a four-match winless streak in the league, which delighted City defender Russell Martin.

He said: “It is a massive, massive win and takes us near the magical 40-point mark and it just gives us that nice little cushion. There has been a few good results from the teams a the bottom so it is a massive win.”
