‘Joker’ wants to be Trap’s ace

Kevin Foley wants to follow the lead of Wolves teammate Stephen Ward by nailing down a place in the Ireland side for Euro 2012.

‘Joker’ wants to be Trap’s ace

The full-back was restored to the squad by Giovanni Trappatoni yesterday after missing the last five games due to an ankle injury.

Now, Foley is keen to make his case to Trap for his inclusion in the side for the friendly against Czech Republic on February 29.

The Italian has labelled Foley his ‘Joker’; the card in his deck who fills many roles. It’s that versatility which Foley hopes will strengthen his hand.

“When I heard the manager refer to me as his Joker, I thought it was because he thought I was a comedian,” quipped the 27-year-old.

“Now that I’m back match-fit and playing for Wolves, I’m delighted to be recalled to the squad. 2011 was the best year of my international career as I won the five of my eight caps then, including my competitive debut at home to Macedonia. It was so disappointing, then, to pick up the ankle injury earlier in the season. When I see the progress Stephen (Ward) has made, it gives me confidence. I’m probably a bit behind other lads in the pecking order because I’ve been out injured. But the manager has said nice things about me and seems to like the fact I’m comfortable playing in a number in defence or midfield.”
